Windows protected your PC Message

What is this all about? (thanks to Google Gemini for this)

The "Windows protected your PC" message is a protective alert from a built-in Windows security feature called Microsoft Defender SmartScreen.

This message does not necessarily mean the software is a virus. Instead, it simply means that the application is unrecognized by Microsoft because it lacks a well-established "reputation history".

Why did this happen?

SmartScreen relies on a crowd-sourced reputation system to keep your computer safe. The alert triggers under a few common scenarios:

  • The software is brand new: If the developer just released an update, not enough people have downloaded it yet for Microsoft to mark it as "trusted".

  • The developer is unknown or unsigned: Small or open-source software developers often don't register digital signatures with Microsoft, triggering an "Unknown Publisher" flag.

We looked into getting our software digitally signed but it is not easy or cheap and since it requires lots of people to install the software before Microsoft will mark it as trusted anyway (unless we pay a lot of money), we are hoping this won’t be a major problem for you. If it is then let us know.

When installing PC-Warrants 2.1 you may get the following popup window:

This looks scary but isn’t. Click on the More Info link and you will see the following window:
