FAQs for 2009 MUTCD Support

Does the upgrade cost anything?
No. All licensed users of PC-Warrants can upgrade for free.

How do I get the upgrade?
Go to the Downloads page of this site and download the PC-Warrants Ver 1.18.x Install Files file. This is a zip file. Unzip the file and then run the Setup.exe file. This installs the new program in the C:\Program Files\PC-Warrants\ folder. The program is named PC-Warrants18x.exe so it won’t  replace any existing versions of PC-Warrants. So you can try the new version and make sure it is working ok and use the older version if needed.

What is different in this version of PC-Warrants?
In this initial release we are only changing what we have to change to add support for the 2009 MUTCD. To support the changes to the Pedestrian Warrant (#4) we had to modify the Volume Data screen to support 15 minute Pedestrian volumes . The details screen for the Pedestrian Warrant was modified considerably to support the graphs that are an integral part of the analysis now. The new Rail Crossing Warrant also required a new details screen, as well as changes to the Site Data screen to allow you to select the minor approach to use for the rail crossing analysis and to enter the Rail Crossing parameters. Small changes were made to many other screens as well to support the new warrants.

Have the reports been modified?
We struggled with this. We have decided to modify only the first page of the report initially to show whether the warrants are met or not. So for both the Pedestrian warrant and the new Rail Crossing warrant you won’t show any details on how the warrant was met, except the status line that is printed on the first page. After this initial release is stable we will modify the reports to create separate pages for each warrant that is enabled, and these detailed reports will show the graphs in both   the of the modified warrants.

Will the new version work with my older studies?
Yes, but this is a little tricky. Your older studies, if they have any at all, have hourly pedestrian volumes, and of course there is no data for the new Rail Crossing warrant. When you open an older study the software recognizes this and converts the old study parameters to the new ones as best it can. It takes any pedestrian volumes and puts them into the first 15 minute interval of each hour. You may want to edit these ped volumes to ‘smooth’ the numbers over the hour so there are reasonable looking values in each of the 15 minute periods. The rail crossing warrant parameters are set to default values; you will want to edit them as needed on the Site Data screen or on the Warrant 9 details screen. You then should save the study so the new edited parameters will be a part of the study file.

Where can I learn more about the modified and new warrants?
There are two tutorials on the Tutorials page. One discusses the Pedestrian warrant and one discusses the new Rail Crossing warrant. If you still have questions, call us.
